What is FICA?

The Financial Intelligence Centre Act.

FICA is a South African law enacted in 2001 designed to fight financial crimes including money laundering, terrorist financing, tax evasion, fraud, and identity theft. It operates through Know Your Client (KYC) frameworks that require accountable institutions to verify who they are doing business with.

The process of vetting, verifying, onboarding, and conducting due diligence can be labour-intensive. Fraudcheck alleviates this burden by automating and optimising the relevant verifications, aligned with your compliance programme.

Since March 2023, Directive 8 has made employee screening mandatory for all Accountable Institutions — adding a further layer of obligation to manage. See our KYE solutions here.

Accountable institutions

If your business falls into any of the following categories, FICA compliance is a legal obligation — not optional.

  • Financial service providers
  • Online gaming operators
  • Real estate practitioners
  • Legal firms
  • Accounting professionals
  • Insurance companies
